  • i heard from rory this morning and he has some bad news. one of his good friends(deleted for OPSEC) was shot and killed yesterday. he is very upset about it and called to vent. he said he was an amazing person and soldier. he has a wife and a month and a half old son who will never get to meet his father. as i cried on the phone, he told me all about him... how he cracked jokes no matter how awful the situation. rory said he was a ray of fresh sunshine to everyone all the time and was never in a bad mood. i can't imagine what his wife is going through, it just hit me so hard. i think this morning it finally hit me how much danger rory is actually in. he said that yesterday after fining out the news, there were about fifteen minutes of sadness, then everyone just got really mad. the whole batallion is going out tomorrow to the city to find the horrible man that did this.

on a little lighter note, rory told me this morning that after three more months, he will be in less danger and have a new job that doesn't involve leaving the base very often. then the last four months he's there he will be a gate guard or help with perimeter security.... much less dangerous. and also, he's not positive, but pretty sure that he will get out of the army as soon as his contract is up. rory said he can't stand the thought of being away from his loved ones for more years. so unless something drastic happens with the election and war, he will get out after his two years are up which is the best news i have heard in a long time.

my thoughts and BIG prayers are with this soldier's family as they go through this awful time in their lives.

  • Sorry Sarah... I had to edit your comment since the Department of Defense has not yet announced the death of this soldier and it would be terrible if his family somehow found out and had not already been notified thru the proper channels. But thank you very much for posting and keeping us updated. Hearing from/about Ror, makes us all breathe a little easier. My heart goes out to the whole unit and this soldier's family in this very difficult time. Yes, thankfully his job should get less intense as each of the batteries are doing 4 month rotations on the various jobs.

    Rory,

I am so sorry. I never wanted you to see or experience these things, but then we talked about that before and it doesn't change the fact that you are there. Smile at his memory and let that fill your heart; do not open the door to hate. Do you job and serve your country as I know you will, keep your head down, and be safe. We are all with you each and every day in spirit and prayers. You are such a light in all of our lives, and we will be waiting to welcome you back home with opens arms and lots of love.
